Santa Maria Joint Union High School District

Virtual Learning Academy

Creating an independent study program that provides maximum flexibility for our students.

Purpose

The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District is returning to full-time, in-person instruction for the 2021-2022 school year. It is the priority of the State of California and our district that all students return to on-campus learning to experience the valuable role it plays for our children’s social and emotional development.

We also recognize the individuality of our students, their unique learning styles, and special family circumstances. The purpose of the SMJUHSD Virtual Learning Academy is to create a rigorous college-prep A-G independent study program that provides flexibility for our students using a facilitator model where the student utilizes online curriculum in a predominately self-paced fashion.

Currently, we are not offering a hybrid instructional model. Students will attend school either fully on-campus or fully online.

Student Work

Student Work is to be completed using an online curricular program. Students must meet with their facilitator, whether in person or via Zoom, a minimum of one hour per week.

Extracurricular

Students are welcome and encouraged to participate in their home school’s extracurricular activities while part of the Virtual Learning Academy including: ASB, Band, Clubs, FCCLA, FFA, FBLA, Skills USA, Sports etc. Normal requirements apply.

Teacher Assignment

Students are assigned to online courses with the teacher acting as facilitator, providing support and/or reteaching

All teachers are fully credentialed and in compliance with title 5 section 80005(b).

504, Special Education and English Learner Services

Some student services are only provided onsite. This does not prevent a student from attending the Virtual Learning Academy, although a student may be required to be present on campus for some services.
